The Ascent
Coopering is one of whisky’s base trades: wood, metal, pressure, and time managed before spirit ever enters the cask. In Islay, Scotland, Jim McEwan entered that work in 1963 at Bowmore Distillery as a Trainee Cooper, learning the barrel as a working vessel rather than an abstract influence on maturation. Blending requires a different discipline: selection, balance, and continuity across parcels of whisky. By 1976, McEwan was working as blender at Morrison Bowmore, applying sensory judgment to Islay spirit. In 2001, the production role widened when he became Master Distiller at Bruichladdich Distillery, a post he held until 2015, during a period associated with both tradition and experimentation at the site. Distillery production depends on decisions that move from raw material through spirit character to release. From 2017 to 2021, McEwan served as Production Director at Ardnahoe Distillery, continuing that work within Islay’s distilling trade.
At Work Now
Post-Ardnahoe, the work remains tied to Islay’s current output rather than only to past roles. Ardnahoe Distillery’s inaugural release is a non-chill-filtered, 50% ABV whisky, positioned in the bold, smoky register associated with Islay whisky heritage. McEwan has described his continuing involvement plainly: “There’s still life in the dog yet…I’m still running.”

Acclaim
Recognition in whisky often tracks both technical contribution and influence across houses. McEwan has been named Master Distiller of the Year, inducted into the Whisky Hall of Fame, and named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
