The Climb

Training at the University of Adelaide gave Hughes a technical base built around precision and palate. That grounding became the starting point for Rieslingfreak, where the discipline of winemaking, the direction of the business, and the identity of the label are all tied to the same focused approach. The name Rieslingfreak makes that intent plain: the work is centered on Riesling, and it stays there. The role has expanded from education into practice. As owner, director, and winemaker, Hughes is responsible for the wines, the business direction, and the label’s character. That kind of remit leaves little room for drift. The decisions are his, from the shape of the operation to the finished wines that carry the name.

Today

The title carries both cellar and business responsibility, and that is where Hughes works best. He moves between production, brand identity, and the bottle itself, with each part of the job informing the next. It is a position that asks for technical control and a clear sense of what the wine is meant to be. The result is a practice where interest and occupation meet at the same point. The work gives his focus a form, and Rieslingfreak gives that focus a channel.

Signature

John's signature wines include Rieslingfreak No 3 Riesling 2017 Clare Valley and Number 50. Both reflect the precision and specificity that shape his approach, each one carrying the kind of quiet confidence that comes from knowing exactly what the style is meant to be.
