Coming Up
Training at Sorbonne gave Joseph Abboud a formal base before retail and merchandising taught the rest: at Thom McAn he worked dyeing women’s shoes, then moved to Anderson-Little as a sales associate, and later into Louis Boston, where he went from part-time worker to buyer, then buyer, merchandiser, and coordinator of promotion and advertising. That sequence reads like a practical education in presentation, buying, and the mechanics of moving product to consumer. In 1981, he became menswear designer at Ralph Lauren, and by 1987 he had founded and owned the Joseph Abboud label, putting his name on the work as both signature and stake. The later years map a career that moved through multiple points in menswear without leaving the trade behind. He co-founded JA Apparel in 1988–2005, worked with fashion director Peter Speliopoulos from 1991, founded Jaz from 2007, created Black Brown 1826 for Lord & Taylor from 2008, served as chief creative officer at HMX from 2010, and became Chief Creative Director at Men's Wearhouse from 2012. Taken together, those roles show a steady working knowledge of how clothing is shaped, sold, and positioned for audience.
Where They Are Now
In Melbourne, Joseph Abboud’s current hospitality work is split between two roles: founder and chef of Rumi in East Brunswick, and founder and chef of Rumi Brunswick. The move from fashion to restaurant work keeps the same underlying discipline in view: composition, point of view, and consistency. At Rumi, the specialty is Middle Eastern food, handled with the kind of clarity that lets a dining room understand what it is there for.
Signature
Charcoal meats are Joseph's signature dishes. The reference is direct: fire, smoke, and a cooking style that depends on control as much as heat. It fits a chef whose background was built in structured retail and menswear, where finish, framing, and consistency matter, and it carries cleanly into the plate at Rumi.
