Born on April 20, 1973, and raised in Austin, Texas, Julie Powell is associated above all with the Julie/Julia Project, the 2002 Salon blog built around cooking every recipe in *Mastering the Art of French Cooking* and writing the work in public.

Food writing in the early web era took shape through serial practice, deadline pressure, and the exposure of process. Julie Powell, trained at Amherst College (1995), worked as a writer (1995–2022) and, while an employee at Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (from 2002), used the julie/Julia Project at Salon (from 2002) to make recipe execution, domestic constraint, and first-person reporting the working material.
