i. Biography
Julio Sáenz is the technical director and head winemaker of La Rioja Alta, S.A., where he joined in 1996 and took on technical leadership of the group in 2005. He oversees winemaking across La Rioja Alta, Torre de Oña, Áster, and Lagar de Cervera, and is associated with the house style behind wines such as Gran Reserva 890 and 904. He was born and brought up in Rioja and trained first as a pharmaceutical chemist before earning further degrees in viticulture and oenology.
