Quality control before the cellar

Fault control came before the cellar for Julio Sáenz, Winemaker at La Rioja Alta in Haro, where he began in 1996 as head of Quality Control. That first station matters here. At a house founded in 1890, continuity is not a mood; it is a discipline applied to Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo as they move through the Rioja DOCa program. Sáenz later worked as an oenologist at Torre de Oña and Áster, then returned to La Rioja Alta, S.A. as Head Winemaker and Technical Director, a post he has held from 2005 to present. His public language stays close to the work: “We maintain a philosophy of utmost respect for the environment, applying techniques that help us reduce the use of chemical compounds.” In Haro, that reads less as a claim than as a technical preference, restraint over force, reduction where reduction is useful, a cellar standard carried from analysis bench to blending table.

Gran Reserva as a house method

The place is known for preserving a classic Rioja style, especially through long-aging Gran Reserva wines. The house names Gran Reserva 890 and Gran Reserva 904 as central bottles, with Viña Ardanza and Viña Arana sitting within the broader range associated with Sáenz’s hand. He has pointed to the 2010 vintage of Gran Reserva 890 as a red wine he would choose from his own house, a useful admission because it locates his palate inside the cellar rather than outside it. The production scale is large, with 425-515 hectares of vineyards attached to the house, but the signature remains one of patience: still red wines, oak, time, and the measured preservation of Rioja shape.

The cellar sets the tempo. La Rioja Alta works from a historic bodega with extensive oak aging cellars and nearby vineyards, a quiet setting where the scale of the casks does not need theatrical help. The atmosphere is traditional, with massive oak vessels giving the room its weight and its smell, the kind of place where age is present as material, not decoration. Private tastings belong to that rhythm, but the more telling texture is bench-side and cellar-side: barrels resting, bottles waiting, a program built around still red wine rather than novelty. The room asks for a slower eye. It rewards one.

Recognition kept in proportion

In 2022, Sáenz received La Semana Vitivinícola Best Winemaker, and that same year brought public recognition for both maker and wine. Awards can flatten a cellar if they become the subject, but here they sit behind the work. His long line through La Rioja Alta, Torre de Oña, Áster, and back to Haro keeps the craft tied to Gran Reserva 890.
