Portrait of Lena Willhammar
i. Biography
In ceramics, the shift from one material language to another often starts with what doesn’t fit. At art school in Stockholm, Lena Willhammar first trained in oil and textiles, a grounding in surface, structure, and handling that did not hold. The move to ceramics gave that training a clearer use: touch became central, and the work settled into a form where function and appearance had to stay in balance. From there, Willhammar’s practice developed through precision and material control, leading into restaurant work where vessels are judged as closely as the food they carry.
Where They Are Now
For restaurant ceramics, the brief is never only visual. Lena Willhammar makes plates for Daniel Berlin’s restaurant, where the vessel has to carry the dish, support the service, and still read as an object in its own right. That puts the aesthetic and the functional in direct conversation. Willhammar keeps the visual first, then adjusts the work around the demands of Daniel’s restaurant, where use, timing, and presentation all place pressure on the plate. The result sits in that narrow zone where ceramic form serves the room without disappearing into it.

Signature
Table Noir designed for Daniel Berlin crafted by Lena Willhammar is a clear example of ceramic work shaped for a specific dining context. The piece reads through restraint and surface, with the plate doing more than holding food: it helps set the register of the table. In Willhammar’s practice, that object is built to sit inside a restaurant’s visual system while still meeting the basic demands of service. The strength of the work is in that double function, where design and utility are kept in balance rather than separated.
In Their Words “For me, the aesthetic comes first. But then I work on the functionality with Daniel’s restaurant.” “At art school in Stockholm my first education was in oil and textiles, but this didn’t work out too well so I went over to ceramics.”
