i. Biography
Trade journalism rewards detail: category movement, retail pressure, on-trade shifts, and the language operators use when the market changes. Lucy Britner’s route into the drinks beat came through B2B writing, with a degree module on trade journalism establishing the value of the more detailed level of reporting that the trade press often requires.
The Path
Drinks and hospitality reporting is built on close reading of pubs, bars, restaurants, retailers, and suppliers, rather than consumer-facing shorthand. Early in Lucy Britner’s career, Lucy worked as a reporter at Publican's Morning Advertiser and Drinks International, became editor at World's 50 Best Bars, and wrote on the restaurant and bar scene at Square Meal in London (until 2015). Lucy then moved to just-drinks (from 2015) as deputy editor, and today is editor of Drinks Retailing.
The Work Today
Retail drinks coverage sits where category analysis meets buying, distribution, regulation, and consumer change. At Drinks Retailing, Lucy Britner’s work is positioned inside that trade frame: tracking how the drinks business is sold, listed, discussed, and adjusted as the market moves.
In Their Words “The way the industry shifts also reflects wider cultural changes – a bit like what we’re seeing now with the boom in low- and no-alcohol drinks.”
Acclaim
Trade recognition in drinks often signals standing within the category as much as visibility outside it. Lucy's honors include Keeper of the Quaich.
