Where They Are Now

Head winemaking at Quinta Do Crasto in Sabrosa, Portugal has been Manuel Lobo’s brief since 2007, and the work sits inside a Douro made by granite slopes, river light, and generations of labor. In that setting, the job is less about invention than consistency: reading a region closely enough to let site, season, and house style stay in view at the same time. Training at University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro gave Manuel Lobo the formal base for work in the Douro Valley, where he served as winemaker at Montez Champalimaud in Douro Valley (2002–2007). Those years placed him in a landscape where technical decisions are terrain, and where repetition is part of the method rather than a limitation. Since 2007, head winemaking at Quinta Do Crasto has meant continuity as much as control. The role carries the weight of an estate name with reach beyond Sabrosa, and Lobo’s place in it has been defined by steady service to the house style, translating the Douro into bottle season after season.

Quinta Do Crasto Reserva 2009 Douro and Quinta Do Crasto Crasto 2010 Douro mark the terms of Manuel Lobo’s signature. Both names sit firmly within the estate’s identity, and both point to the practical demands of the Douro: keeping power, freshness, and expression in balance without losing sight of place or vintage.

For Manuel Lobo, whose path runs from University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro to Montez Champalimaud in Douro Valley (2002–2007) and then to Quinta Do Crasto from 2007 onward, the statement reads as a measure of obligation as much as ambition.
