i. Biography
In Diano d'Alba, Italy, the work begins with land: vineyards held inside a family farm whose cultivation reaches back to 1700. Since 2000, Massimo Veglio has been co-owner and wine producer at Cascina Cappellano, where Nebbiolo, Barbera, Arneis, and Chardonnay are treated less as commodities than as yearly measures of soil, season, and restraint.
The Place The Veglio family has farmed at Cascina Cappellano for more than 100 years, on ground cultivated since 1700. The family story there began in 1931 with mixed farming: orchards, vineyards, and cattle sharing the practical rhythm of a Piedmontese estate before wine became the central expression. A decisive step came in 1972, when Luigi Veglio vinified the family’s first harvest under the family name, helping establish the estate’s present production path. Massimo’s work belongs to that continuation: a current role held since 2000, shaped by inherited land, family labor, and the Langa region around it. The wines made by Luigi and Massimo Veglio are described as genuine, meticulously crafted in every detail, and expressive of the Langhe of yesteryear. That phrase points to a style rooted in continuity rather than display: wines tied to place, vintage, and the long memory of farming.
The Method The estate has worked organically for more than 20 years, with biodiversity in the vineyard and careful attention to each vintage in the winery. Organic certification has appeared on all Veglio family wines since 2012, giving formal shape to a practice already central to the estate’s farming. In the vineyard, Massimo and Luigi cultivate according to organic-farming principles, avoiding chemical products and pesticides to preserve a healthy, harmonious habitat. Their approach to organic wine is also a territorial stance: they see it as part of being custodians of their land and maintaining a no-compromise relationship with nature. The craft is exacting but not showy. Attention moves from habitat to harvest to cellar detail, with each vintage handled on its own terms rather than forced into sameness.
The Range The Veglio estate works with Nebbiolo, Barbera, Arneis, and Chardonnay, creating eight different cuvées each year. Its wines are strongly connected to the Langa region, including three types of Barolo, Diano d'Alba DOCG, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Arneis DOCG, and Chardonnay. Among the named bottlings, the 2018 Barolo Raviole carried particular attention when Ranger Wine offered it in a very limited selection in fall 2022. Luigi & Massimo Veglio’s Raviole is a Barolo from Grinzane Cavour in Piedmont, made from Nebbiolo. Another site-specific wine, Barolo DOCG Castagni, is produced from the estate’s vineyards in La Morra. Together, these cuvées place the work across named Langa ground, with Nebbiolo at the center and organic farming as the discipline beneath it.
