At Blue Mountain Vineyard in Okanagan Falls, ownership keeps Matt Mavety working from the vineyard outward: land, fruit, and continuity are the terms that shape the estate’s day-to-day decisions. The Okanagan’s growing conditions sit at the center of that framework. In Mavety’s own words, “The big thing in the Okanagan is the natural acidity and the clean fruit.” That places the region’s materials first, and the winemaking task is to work with what the site gives. His language stays close to observation. “That’s a lot of experience with the land,” he has said, using experience to mean repeated contact with site rather than abstraction. The same practical lens appears in the question he has raised about the work: “Are there certain expressions of land or nuances of land that would be exciting to explore?” Focus is part of the method. “We are much better off to stay focussed on what we are doing,” Mavety has said, a position that treats discipline as a tool for consistency.
