i. Biography
Nick Hetzel earned the Master Sommelier title in 2013 after building his work on the restaurant floor, where timing, service, and table-side judgment are part of the craft. An early interest in food narrowed into wine, and then into the more exacting task of using wine to shape a meal without drawing attention away from it. The route through top restaurants in Las Vegas and the Napa Valley gave him the pressure and pace that would later inform his work in education at Jackson Family Wines.
Coming Up
Early work as a sommelier at top restaurants in Las Vegas and the Napa Valley, where Nick Hetzel stayed until 2017, taught the practical side of the trade: reading a table, anticipating a need, and placing a bottle where it supports the room rather than interrupts it. The floor made wine a live part of service, not a standalone subject. That experience now sits behind his broader role since 2017 at Jackson Family Wines.
Where They Are Now
As Director of Wine Education at Jackson Family Wines, Nick Hetzel applies restaurant discipline to teaching. The same attention that once mattered in service now shapes how he explains wine, with emphasis on clarity, precision, and use at the table. In that sense, education becomes an extension of sommelier work rather than a break from it. The move from service to instruction keeps the core of the job intact: how wine is selected, discussed, and paired. Nick Hetzel carries forward what the restaurant floor demanded and uses it in a setting built for broader learning. The result is a perspective formed in dining rooms and refined through years of considering how wine fits a meal.
