i. Biography
Coming Up
Pati Jinich’s route into the kitchen moved through policy, classrooms, and television production before it settled into food work. She trained at Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, Georgetown University, and L'Academie de Cuisine, building a base that spans academic and culinary settings. Before she became a familiar presence to viewers and diners alike, she worked as Production Assistant at PBS series New Tastes from Texas with Chef Stephan Pyles in Dallas, Texas and Political Analyst at Inter-American Dialogue in Washington, DC. By her own account, the break came when she decided to take a plunge, and left her job to give food a real try. That decision set the terms of the work that followed: teaching, hosting, and putting food in conversation with culture. Today, Pati is Resident Chef of Mexican Cultural Institute (since 2007), creator and host of Pati's Mexican Table (since 2011), creator and host of La Frontera with Pati Jinich (since 2021), and creator and host of Pati Jinich Explores Panamericana (since 2025). Across those roles, her approach stays direct and public-facing, with food treated as both subject and method.
Where They Are Now
Since 2007, she has served as Resident Chef at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, DC, where the work has centered on teaching cooking classes and making special dinners. The practice is part instruction, part hosting, and part public exchange, with the kitchen used as a site for showing how Mexican food is made, discussed, and shared. That mix of research, testing, teaching, and domestic practice is how she describes the work herself. "Most of what I read, think, research, test and teach (including to my three boys, much to the dismay of my mother in law) is about food." The line maps a broad field of practice: scholarship, experimentation, family cooking, and the everyday labor of keeping food at the center of the table.
Signature
Taken together, those titles show the range of the work: home cooking, borderlands, and the longer geography of the Panamericana, all approached through food.
In Their Words “Most of what I read, think, research, test and teach (including to my three boys, much to the dismay of my mother in law) is about food.” “I became the Resident Chef and started teaching cooking classes and making special dinners.”
