The Path

Robert Eden’s route into wine reads like a slow accumulation of place, instinct, and hard-earned perspective. He began as an apprentice at Barossa Valley in Australia, learning the discipline of the vineyard from the ground up, before moving on to work with renowned winemakers in Winemaking roles in Italy, Spain, and California. Each stop added another layer to his understanding of what wine can be: shaped by climate, patience, and the invisible decisions made long before a bottle ever reaches a table. He then apprenticed at Becky Wasserman-Hone in Burgundy, France, a formative chapter that deepened his relationship with one of the world’s most closely watched wine regions. By 1986, he had become a consultant in Burgundy, France, stepping into a role that suggests both trust and technical authority. It was a path built not on a single dramatic leap, but on a steady gathering of knowledge across continents and vintages. Today, Robert is co-owner and winemaker of Château Maris (since 1997), where his long apprenticeship in diverse wine cultures meets a more settled expression of craft. The title reflects a career that has moved from learning to leadership, from absorbing the work of others to shaping a place and its wines in his own voice.

The Work Today

Robert’s approach is marked by a kind of disarming directness, especially when he talks about grapes. His blunt line on grapes is: "It was due to bad-tasting grapes, it’s as simple as that!" The remark carries the plainspoken force of someone who has spent enough time around vineyards and cellars to value clarity over ornament.

Signature

Among Robert’s signature wines are Château Maris La Touge 2018 and Château Maris Savoir Vieillir Organic AOP Minervois. Both sit within the world he has helped shape at Château Maris, where the name itself has become his work as co-owner and winemaker. These wines stand as markers of a career rooted in attention to detail and in the patient translation of place into bottle.
