i. Biography
Coffee branding, when it is handled as part of the craft rather than as decoration after production, sets the terms for how a bag is read before it is brewed. In Robert Flam’s work, the Queens coffee base sits alongside organic positioning, biodynamic sourcing, packaging, marketing, events, retail, and the customer-facing signals that move a food-and-beverage name from first notice to repeat use.
Where It Started The later singular brand, Jailhouse Coffee, is positioned as an organic, Queens-based craft coffee company, with its branding, packaging, and marketing created by Flam himself. In coffee, the house is carried by more than roast and origin language. The package, the pop-up, the merchandise line, the online campaign, and the shelf presentation all affect how a customer understands the product before the first cup. Flam’s authorship of those elements places the brand system inside the work rather than outside it. Jailhouse Coffee functions as the first structure: a Queens craft-coffee label built around both taste and transmission. The work stays close to the practical questions every beverage maker faces once the product leaves the bench: what the customer sees, where the encounter happens, how the retail cue lands, and what remains after purchase. His own marketing language at Back9 Marketing is direct: "We promote luxury food and beverage brands through cutting-edge online strategies, experiential events, and retail pop-ups." The line connects the coffee work to the carrying systems around it: online strategy, events, retail presence, and the movement of a specialty product into daily use.
Who Shaped Them Jailhouse supplied the first house; Deep Valley Biodynamic Coffee widened the frame; Breakout Coffee turned the parent brand toward a value-priced extension. Biodynamic sourcing gave the coffee work a more specific agricultural register. As founder and owner of Deep Valley Biodynamic Coffee, Flam moved from organic craft coffee into that claim. In 2017, Deep Valley Biodynamic Coffee was described as the first all-biodynamic coffee beans introduced to the U.S. Market, launched in partnership with Whole Foods. That branch changed the retail language without discarding the original structure. Jailhouse Coffee carried the Queens craft identity and self-built brand system; Deep Valley Biodynamic Coffee carried the biodynamic claim and the Whole Foods partnership that brought it forward. Across the labels, the useful lesson is register. One coffee name holds the founding identity, another speaks through biodynamic sourcing, and another addresses accessibility and scale. Flam’s role sits inside that movement as the builder connecting product, claim, and route to market.
The Work Today
Jailhouse Coffee remains the parent house in the work: an organic coffee brand in Queens, New York, founded and owned by Flam. Its identity is built through branding, packaging, and marketing around coffee rather than through coffee alone. Breakout Coffee extends the same system in a different price register. Created as a value-priced line extension for Jailhouse Coffee, it was built to integrate online, offline, retail, merchandise, and sales channels. The working pattern is consistent: establish the coffee house, build the visual and commercial language around it, then create related lines for different price points and routes to market. Product and pathway are developed together, with the shelf, event, online campaign, merchandise, and sale treated as connected parts of the same trade problem. Read as lineage, the structure is connective. Jailhouse is the parent house, Deep Valley is the biodynamic branch, and Breakout is the more accessible extension, all tied to Flam’s focus on how luxury food and beverage brands find their audience.
