i. Biography
Robert Joseph has worked as a consultant since 2005, but the technical basis for that work was built earlier across editorial, judging, and publishing rooms where wine is assessed in public. The through-line is not one fixed post but accumulated judgment: reading the trade from different positions, then turning that knowledge into commentary, strategy, and commercial advice. Across the career, wine is treated not only as product, but as a category shaped by language, presentation, and packaging.
The Path
Authority in wine is often built by repetition, timing, and proximity to the arguments that shape the trade. Robert Joseph’s work at the Sunday Telegraph until 2001 placed him inside the daily circulation of opinion and market response. He then moved into publishing as founder / publisher at Wine International until 2005, where the role shifted from reporting the conversation to helping frame it. Earlier still, he had helped establish a visible industry platform as co-founder at International Wine Challenge in United Kingdom from 1984–2006, later serving as chairman at International Wine Challenge until 2006. Taken together, those roles show a career formed through editorial scrutiny, judging, and institutional building. That range continues in the work listed under his own consultancy since 2005. Robert is consultant of Self-employed consultancy since 2005, co-owner of Le Grand Noir wines since 2005, co-strategist of 5forests, judge of Wine Travel Awards, and co-presenter of Real Business of Wine and Thirst Fursday winecasts. The mix matters: it keeps him moving between brands, markets, and commentary, with the perspective of someone who has spent decades inside the trade’s practical and rhetorical machinery.
The Work Today
Since 2005, he has worked as a consultant under his own name, bringing long trade experience into direct advisory work. The point of emphasis is packaging, where he is blunt about the need for change and unsentimental about inherited norms. "Packaging will change. There is no reason for 90% of the world’s wine to be in 75cl glass bottles." The line is less slogan than position: a refusal to treat the standard format as a permanent rule.
Signature
Robert's wine focus include Le Grand Noir and K'AVSHIRI Wine. Both names sit within a career that has combined editorial intelligence with commercial involvement, and both depend on close attention to identity, positioning, and the story a wine is asked to carry. His interests extend beyond tasting notes into the larger structure around wine, including how it is presented and how it is discussed.
In Their Words “Packaging will change. There is no reason for 90% of the world’s wine to be in 75cl glass bottles.”
