At Domaine Taupenot-Merme in Morey-Saint-Denis, the work is carried through lineage as much as management, and Romain Taupenot has held that continuity since 1998. He is the ninth generation to guide the domaine, with a style marked less by display than by steadiness — a modern hand working inside a family structure built over nine generations. Before wine became his full-time calling, Romain Taupenot trained at Paris and then worked for years as a finance professional. That background brought structure, calculation, and discipline, and those habits did not disappear when he turned to the estate in 1998. They simply changed form, moving from the logic of balance sheets to the practical demands of harvest, élevage, and continuity. Since 1998, Romain Taupenot has remained the winemaker of Domaine Taupenot-Merme. The choice reads as deliberate rather than dramatic: one profession set aside for another, with no ambiguity about the shift. His own words make the point plainly: “I’ve absolutely no interest in going back, I’m completely happy with what we have now.”

Les Didiers Premier Cru 2012 Nuits-St-Georges and Les Terres Blanches Premier Cru 2013 Nuits-St-Georges sit at the center of Romain Taupenot’s signature. The wines point to what his work privileges: place, vintage, and the slow conversion of fruit into something more fixed in memory and structure. When he says, “It’s the vintage of the century!”, the line lands as an unguarded response to a year that clearly met the standard of the cellar.
