Food set the first reference point before the cellar: in Russell P From’s account, home cooking established an early standard for taste, with wine present but not treated as inherently fine. He is the proprietor and winemaker of Herman Story Wines in Paso Robles, California, a role held from 2001 to the present. “It all started with cooking and a love of food. My mom is a very accomplished chef, not professionally, but at home. So I was exposed to great food. And wine, though not necessarily good wine.”
The Climb
Cellar formation moved through Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and then into production work in Monterey County, California, where Russell P From interned at Lockwood Winery / Lockwood Vineyards. The practical side of the trade continued through work at Rosa's and part-time work at Tantara Winery (1998–2000), giving the future label its working base rather than a purely academic one. Since 2001, Herman Story Wines has been the site of that accumulated cellar practice, with Russell P From serving as proprietor and winemaker. The through-line is hands-on production work carried into an independent Paso Robles, California label.
