The Path

Formal wine education and cellar repetition gave the craft its base in Johnson’s training at University of Michigan (1996) and University of California, Davis (1999), followed by enologist / winemaker work at St. Francis Winery & Vineyards in Sonoma County, California (1999–2007). That span joined technical discipline to the practical cycle of fermentation, élevage, and harvest-by-harvest judgment. Seasonal work outside California added another frame for ripeness and place when Johnson was harvest intern at St. Hallett Winery in Barossa Valley, Australia (2002). The defining block-work chapter followed at Pride Mountain Vineyards (2007–2022), where Cabernet Sauvignon, high-elevation fruit, 46 vineyard blocks, and an 83-acre ranch required detailed selection and the constant calibration of identity, depth, and presence. Institutional Napa Valley winemaking entered the record when Johnson served as director of winemaking at Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville, California (2022–2023). The current chapter is broader by design: founder / consultant winemaker of SJB Winemaking (since 2023), resident winemaker of Tamber Bey Vineyards (since 2023), resident winemaker of CourAvant wineries (since 2023), consultant winemaker of The Walls, Pášxa, and Mullan Road Cellars (since 2023), and co-founder / winemaker of STEREOGRAPH Wines (since 2023). The Work Today

Calistoga winemaking at Tamber Bey Vineyards places Johnson’s Cabernet Sauvignon and high-elevation experience inside a warm Napa Valley setting where intensity must be managed rather than amplified for its own sake. The work is to read generosity, preserve aromatic lift, and hold freshness within fruit concentration. Napa Valley winemaking at CourAvant extends the same site-first method into another set of expectations. Multiple projects require the winemaker to separate house needs from vineyard signals, then make decisions that let fruit register without being forced into a fixed style. Founder and winemaker work at Stereograph, begun in 2023, gives Johnson a direct outlet for the technical training, cellar practice, and site-focused instincts established across earlier roles. The craft emphasis remains practical: read the material, preserve useful detail, and build wines with clarity of structure.

Signature

Signature bottlings include Pride Mountain Viognier program. Within a career strongly associated with Cabernet Sauvignon, that program marks a useful counterpoint: aroma, texture, richness, and brightness handled as the central materials. It sits beside the larger body of work as evidence that Johnson’s cellar decisions are not limited to power or extraction, but also to balance, perfume, and energy.

Recognition for Johnson’s winemaking includes 100-point score for Pride Mountain 2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (2013), 100-point score for Pride Mountain 2012 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (2012), Three wines included in Top 100 Wines of the World, Over 30 wines served at White House state dinners, and #3, Top 10 Most Badass Women Winemakers. The record combines critical scoring, list placement, and formal public service, while the craft evidence remains concrete: Cabernet Sauvignon built with enough site expression, structure, and finish to stand under close scrutiny.
