i. Biography
Sara Lecompte Cuvelier stepped into Château Léoville Poyferré’s managing directorship in Saint-Julien in 2018, a role shaped by family inheritance but not defined by easy acceptance. In wine, lineage can be an entry point or a pressure point; for Lecompte Cuvelier, it was both before it became commitment. As she put it, “I realized one day that wine was part of my legacy. I was the only person in my family not working in wine.” The line places her career in the practical terms of succession, resistance, and eventually responsibility.
The Climb
Bordeaux Sciences Agro provided the technical and agricultural base for Lecompte Cuvelier’s work, grounding her in the systems that support fine wine production. At Château Léoville Poyferré, the progression was not abrupt: since 2011, she has served as board member and General Director of the estate. That kind of long view matters in a property where decisions are made in relation to season, harvest, and the cumulative logic of place. Her path to leadership was built through repeated exposure to the estate’s working structure before it became a formal mandate in 2018.
Today
Since 2018, Lecompte Cuvelier has held the General Director role at Château Léoville Poyferré, carrying forward an approach tied to continuity as much as authority. The estate presents its wines as rooted in terroir, savoir-faire, and team work, with the unified whole serving the wine. That framing is instructive: land, technique, and collective effort are treated as interdependent, not separate duties. In that setting, the role of leadership is to hold those parts together while staying accountable to the demands of vineyard and cellar.
In Their Words “I realized one day that wine was part of my legacy. I was the only person in my family not working in wine.” Taken together, the quotes describe a familiar tension in family wine businesses: inheritance carrying weight, and independence pushing back against it. For Lecompte Cuvelier, the work appears to have moved through that resistance into a position of accepted responsibility.
Recognition
Her clearest professional marker is the 2018 executive leadership role at the Saint-Julien estate. It brings together the years of study, the board-level involvement beginning in 2011, and the assumption of full responsibility at Château Léoville Poyferré.
