i. Biography
Since 2019, master distiller Shane Fraser has worked at Tenmile Distillery in Wassaic, New York, where whisky practice meets American single malt. The role folds distillery management into the same brief: grain handling, batch consistency, and release identity all sit within one line of responsibility. At Tenmile, the emphasis is on continuity—doing the work the same way, paying attention to the small decisions, and letting process and place carry the spirit without adornment.
The Path
A day-shift operator at Royal Lochnagar Distillery in Scottish Highlands is where Shane Fraser entered the trade, starting at ground level and learning production through repetition, observation, and the daily tempo of the stillroom. Senior operator roles at Diageo in Oban Distillery and Diageo in Royal Lochnagar Distillery followed, building the practical fluency that comes from staying close to the machinery, the mashing, and the routines that keep a distillery running. In 2007, he became distillery manager at John & George Grant in Glenfarclas Distillery, taking on the steadier demands of oversight and judgment. He later served as production manager at Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso, Caithness (2012–2019), carrying that operational discipline into another house for seven years. Since 2019, Shane is master distiller of Tenmile Distillery, where that whisky background is now applied to American single malt.
The Work Today
His own definition of the job is plain: "Perfection in a spirit is to do things very consistently and don’t change things." That is the core of the work. Where the industry can lean on novelty, Fraser returns to repetition, steadiness, and control—the less visible habits that keep production coherent from batch to batch. As he puts it, "It’s grain to glass, and it’s all grown and made in New York State." It is a statement of process as much as place: the finished spirit only holds together if the work before it is handled with discipline.
In Their Words “I’m certainly not perfect, but I think what we’re doing at the distillery is close to the best whisky I’ve made for a long, long time.” “Perfection in a spirit is to do things very consistently and don’t change things.”
Acclaim
His measure of the result stays measured: "I’m certainly not perfect, but I think what we’re doing at the distillery is close to the best whisky I’ve made for a long, long time." The point is not self-mythmaking. It is confidence earned through making, managing, and tightening the work over time. In that sense, the recognition sits inside the process itself: consistency as method, restraint as a working standard, and Tenmile as the place where that accumulated practice is put to use.
