Portrait of Shannon Algiere
i. Biography
Shannon Algiere’s work sits at the meeting point of crop production, garden and greenhouse management, farm-based education, and holistic farm design. At Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, that blend of daily stewardship and systems thinking has shaped a career built on practical attention to what soil, weather, plants, and people need. The result is a path that reads less like a single specialization than a steady accumulation of knowledge across growing, teaching, and land care. Early exposure to agriculture came through strawberry fields, peach orchards, and local fairs, where goats and rabbits were part of the landscape. Those settings gave Algiere an agricultural grounding shaped by fieldwork, animal care, and community ritual rather than abstraction. That early experience carried into later study at the University of Rhode Island and into roles that kept returning to land stewardship and education. As a volunteer ranger at Costa Rica National Park Service, Algiere’s work pointed toward observation and maintenance of ecosystems. As a teacher at Nature Centers, that same attentiveness moved into a classroom and visitor setting, where plants and landscapes had to be translated into something others could use. A manager role, followed by work in a biodynamic greenhouse operation, added production scale and placed Algiere in environments where timing, plant care, and environmental balance were part of the daily routine. Algiere also helped develop a 60-member market farm at Connecticut market farm in Connecticut, a chapter that highlights coordination, shared labor, and the logistics behind a functioning farm operation. At Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Westchester County, New York, the work expanded through a steady sequence of appointments. Algiere served as flower and herb manager in 2003, farmer liaison manager in 2019, Arts & Ecology Co-Director in 2021, and Arts & Ecology Director in 2022. Each role extended the same core work into a broader frame, with plants, production, and education moving through the institution as connected parts of one farm system. Today, Algiere serves as Farm Operations Manager at Stone Barns Center. The role brings together holistic farm design, crop production, garden and greenhouse management, and farm-based education. It reflects continuity across the full arc of the work: the field informs the greenhouse, the greenhouse informs the classroom, and all of it has to hold under real conditions. In practice, that means making production land legible as both working ground and teaching space, while keeping the farm responsive to the realities of the day.
