    Coming Up

The early work in a brewery is often invisible, and Steve Luke’s path ran through that labor first: sweeping floors and making boxes at Allagash Brewing Company in 2005, then washing kegs at Captain Lawrence Brewing Company in Hudson Valley. That kind of entry into the trade builds a practical reading of how breweries actually function, from cleanup and packaging support to the pace of the back room. At Harpoon Brewery in Boston, he moved into the marketing department, shifting from physical support work into the language that frames beer once it leaves the brewhouse.

Production followed. Luke returned to Allagash Brewing Company as a brewer in 2008, moving from support roles into the center of the work itself. From there, the scope widened through head brewer roles at Cambridge House Brewpub in Connecticut, Rogue's Issaquah Brewhouse, and Elysian Fields until 2015. Each step added a different operating context, but the common thread was the same: brewing as a discipline that ties recipe work, consistency, and daily management together.

By the time Steve Luke became brewer/owner of Cloudburst Brewing in 2015, the trade had already taught him both sides of the house. Ownership here means more than a title; it means the beer and the business sit under the same set of decisions.

    Where They Are Now

Since 2015, brewer and owner Steve Luke has been at Cloudburst Brewing in Seattle, where the work remains split between making beer and running the operation that supports it. That dual role keeps the job grounded in practical tradeoffs: the shape of a recipe, the demands of production, and the realities of ownership all land on the same desk. At Cloudburst Brewing, those responsibilities are not separated out; they are part of the same daily practice.
