The Climb
Wine expertise in Tan Ying Hsien’s work is built on the same habits that shaped his legal training: precision, analysis, and a tolerance for complexity. King’s College London and Gray’s Inn gave him the formal grounding before law took precedence, and his years as lawyer at Standard Chartered Bank until 2009, along with service as member at Competition Appeal Board, Ministry of Trade and Industry until 2009, established a professional base defined by discipline rather than display. That structure later became useful in wine, where judgment has to be argued clearly and held to account. The classroom, the dining room, and the written page are the three settings in which Tan has made wine work. As wine consultant at Saint Pierre in Singapore, he brings technical knowledge into direct contact with service. As wine journalist, speaker and educator, he uses language as a working tool, not decoration. As founder of Taberna Wine Academy in Singapore in 2010, he built an institution around wine education and access, with enough depth to keep the subject intact. Since 2009, his work as wine judge of Wine competitions has extended that same exacting palate into another form of assessment. Taken together, these roles place Tan’s career inside a single trade question: how wine is studied, explained, judged, and served without flattening any of those tasks. The work moves from formal analysis into communication, but the method stays constant—rigour first, then clarity.
Today
Wine education, consultancy, and communication remain the core of Tan Ying Hsien’s current work. He is wine consultant at Saint Pierre in Singapore, while also working as wine journalist, speaker and educator at Taberna Wine Academy, the academy he founded in 2010. That mix of roles keeps him between instruction and interpretation. The work relies on scholarship, but it also has to land in practice, where hospitality, evaluation, and explanation meet the glass.
