i. Biography
Tim Cox is the winemaker at Allegiance Wines in Alstonville, Australia, and the founder behind the business. The work reflects a career spent across hospitality, sales, marketing, distribution, manufacture, merchant ownership, and winery leadership. That span gives his approach a trade’s practical range: direct, economical, and focused on what most clearly reads as place.
Coming Up
A starting point at the University of New South Wales and then the hotel floor at Coogee Bay Hotel from 1990 set the tone for the early years of Tim Cox’s career. Service, operations, and the mechanics of how people meet hospitality were part of the job from the outset. Later roles as Group General Manager at C.inc group of hotels, then with Southcorp Wines, Fosters Group, and The Wine Society, added further layers of market-side experience. Across those positions, the constant was proximity to the bottle, the customer, and the business decisions that shape what gets made and sold. By 2009, that accumulation had become its own base of knowledge. Tim Cox founded Cox Wine Merchants that year, folding commercial judgment into a more independent business structure. Allegiance Wines followed as the next stage, with Tim Cox moving from trade roles into winery ownership and production leadership. The sequence is straightforward: broader industry exposure, then ownership, then a direct hand in making wine.
Where They Are Now
At Allegiance Wines, the work of founder and winemaker places Tim Cox at both the business and cellar level. That combination matters in wine, where vineyard expression, varietal choice, and style all have to line up before a bottle makes sense in the market. Tim Cox describes the method plainly: "Our philosophy is to make the purest expression of each vineyard’s terroir with the region’s most optimal varietal for the most fruit driven result." The emphasis is on clear origin, regional fit, and a fruit-led style that keeps the line from vineyard to glass easy to read.
Signature
Tim's signature wines include Fortuity Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir NV, a blend whose format sits in the sparkling register; Allegiance Wines Fortuity Prosecco NV, a Prosecco made for ready drinking; Sweet Betty 375ml Botrytis Semillon 2018, presented in a smaller bottle and built around botrytis; Unity Cabernet Sauvignon 2022; and Unity Chardonnay 2022. Together they show the scope of his work at Allegiance Wines, moving from sparkling to sweet wine and into still red and white styles, while staying tied to varietal clarity and vineyard expression.
In Their Words “Our philosophy is to make the purest expression of each vineyard’s terroir with the region’s most optimal varietal for the most fruit driven result.”
