i. Biography
Valentín Cortés is a Zapotec mezcalero from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca — son of Don José Cortés, who built the family palenque, and brother of Rolando Cortés, CEO of Casa Cortés. He left Casa Cortés in 2018 with his son Asís to build their own project, Origen Raíz, which works with maestros mezcaleros across several states rather than a single palenque.
