Cabernet sets the tempo before the tasting room fills. Tony Biagi, winemaker at Amici Cellars in Rutherford, works from a Napa grammar learned first at University of California, Davis, then sharpened through cellar leadership at Cade and Plumpjack in Northern California. His role here sits inside a career of named places rather than a single house style: Amici in Calistoga, Patria, Hourglass in St. Helena, To Kalon Vineyard Company in Oakville, and consulting work that reaches Napa, Sonoma, and Paso Robles. The through line is the vineyard. Biagi’s work has often asked him to translate established sites without sanding away their edges, whether he is building his own label at Patria or holding the line for another estate’s program. At Amici Cellars, that means Cabernet Sauvignon leads the conversation, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc also part of the house range. The winery describes the work as small production and sustainable, a useful pair of constraints in a region where fruit source, extraction, and patience in the cellar can carry more weight than volume.

Small lots from named vineyards

The Amici program is built around small batch winemaking from Napa Valley vineyards that the house names directly, including Beckstoffer Georges III and Morisoli. Those names matter because they narrow the work. Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford asks for decisions at the bench and in the cellar that can hold structure without making the wine feel forced; Amici frames its Cabernet Sauvignons around balance and elegance rather than sheer scale. The winery marks 30 years with that point of view still intact. Biagi’s broader practice helps explain the discipline. Since 2013, Patria has given him authorship as founder and winemaker, while Hourglass and consulting assignments have kept him moving between estates. At Amici, that range returns to a quieter task: making vineyard identity legible in bottle.

Foothill quiet over Rutherford fruit

The room works at a lower volume. Amici Cellars sits in the Palisades foothills outside Calistoga, with hillside views over vineyards and a tasting atmosphere shaped for a private pour rather than a crowded counter. The setting is scenic, but the important texture is restraint: the glass, the cellar decisions behind it, the sense that Rutherford fruit arrives with enough authority and does not need a louder stage. Rustic and elegant can be vague words in wine country; here they are best understood through scale. Intimate capacity changes how the wines are received. A Cabernet from Beckstoffer Georges III or Morisoli can be discussed at the pace of the vineyard, with room for the tannin, acidity, and fruit to register without performance.
