Native grapes under Monte Serra

Nerello Mascalese and Carricante set the terms for Giuseppe Benanti, winemaker at Benanti in Viagrande, before the cellar speaks. At this nineteenth-century estate at the foot of Monte Serra, he works with a place already disciplined by slope, stone, and family name. The estate sits in Viagrande, with vineyards on the slopes of Mount Etna and centenary vines rooted in volcanic ground. Its stated course is small-scale and organic, a choice that keeps the work close to the parcels rather than to volume.

Giuseppe Benanti came to wine through building and stewardship. His record includes SIFI in Sicily, then the founding of Benanti in Viagrande and Tenuta di Castiglione di Sicilia, both tied to the years 1988–2012. That chronology matters here because the estate is not presented as a detached tasting address. It is one of the properties through which his career took shape, a house where management, patience, and land became the same discipline. His recognition as Accademico dei Georgofili in 2011 sits in that same register, closer to cultivation than spectacle.

An Etna DOC program in native hands

The cellar’s vocabulary is Etna DOC, and the grapes are the old local grammar: Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Carricante. Benanti’s portfolio moves across still white, still red, and sparkling wines, with named bottlings that keep their relation to place visible. Pietra Marina, Serra della Contessa, Etna White Superiore Pietramarina, Etna Rovittello, and SERRA DELLA CONTESSA Particella No. 587 belong to that line of work.

What can be said is narrower and more useful: the program is built around native varieties, organic sourcing, and a small production scale on Etna. That gives the wines their frame before any tasting note arrives. Carricante carries the white side of the bench; Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio carry the red. The method, as presented by the estate, begins with the mountain and refuses to make the cellar louder than the fruit.

Painted rooms, candelabras, sea air

The rooms hold the nineteenth century without turning it into scenery. Paintings, candelabras, and historic cellars give the house its interior weight; outside, gazebos open toward vineyards and the sea. The atmosphere is quiet, which suits a guided tasting built around attention rather than performance. In a winery this small, the tasting room does not need to carry a crowd. It can let the glass do the measuring.

The setting gives Benanti its particular pressure: Monte Serra behind the estate, Mount Etna’s slopes under vine, and the sea within sight from the outdoor spaces. That geography is not decorative. It is the working condition of the cellar, the reason native grapes and named bottlings matter here. In Viagrande, the glass is Carricante.
