Leadership shaped in the cellar school

The long view comes first in Aberín. Fernando Chivite, winemaker at Bodegas Chivite in Aberín, Spain, works from a house whose family line reaches back to 1647. His formation sits between the technical and the structural: the University of Bordeaux, the Geisenheim Research Institute of Viticulture in Germany, and IESE Business School. That combination matters here because Bodegas Chivite is not a small cellar built around one vintage or one idea. It is a historic family estate, now part of J. Chivite Family Estates, with 557 ha under vine and a sustainable production philosophy. Chivite has also carried the house from the chair rather than only from the bench. He served as president of Bodegas Chivite from 2007 to 2011, and as president of Asociación de Bodegas de Navarra, a role that placed his work inside the wider fabric of Navarre wine. The discipline is not only what goes into bottle. It is how a name survives scale without losing its hand.

Navarra fruit, held in a broad register

The program at Bodegas Chivite moves across still red, still white, still rosé, and dessert wine, with Navarra as the frame and an Atlantic-continental climate around the vines. The estate works with Tempranillo, Garnacha, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Moscatel de Grano Menudo, and Syrah, a range that asks for more than varietal fluency. It asks for decisions about weight, ripeness, acidity, and house language, repeated across very different material. Fernando Chivite’s signature wines include Arbayún chardonnay and Colección 125, bottlings that make the line between cellar craft and family identity visible. The house has also worked with outside expertise, including Denis Dubourdieu, while keeping the family name at the center of the method. That is the harder form of innovation: not a break with lineage, but a correction made inside it.

A modern cellar on an old estate

The estate sits among vineyards at 500m altitude, in a quiet setting where historic ground meets modern winery architecture. Rafael Moneo designed state-of-the-art facilities for the house, and that architectural fact gives the place its particular tension: old family ownership, contemporary cellar infrastructure, and vineyards opening into an Atlantic-continental landscape. The atmosphere is elegant and sophisticated, with a contrast between the rustic setting and precise building. This is not a room that needs spectacle. It has the scale to work broadly, the vineyards to speak in several registers, and the restraint of a house that has had time to edit itself. Estate tastings and private tastings happen inside that frame, but the work remains the point of the visit.

A Navarra name carried forward

Bodegas Chivite’s standing rests on continuity as much as release. Fernando Chivite’s later work in development and business expansion at Bodegas Marqués de Arviza, beginning in 2013, belongs to the same pattern: wine understood as craft, structure, and succession. In Aberín, the enduring measure is the way the family name still gathers Chardonnay, Garnacha, Tempranillo, Moscatel de Grano Menudo, and Colección 125.
