Jonas Brand reads the cellar at Brand Bros - Weingut Brand in Bockenheim, where his role as winemaker keeps the family estate in daily motion. The work is not framed as arrival. Jonas has described the family as 5th generation winemakers, and the phrase sits close to the bench: inherited standards, repeated tasks, a language learned before it needed explanation. At the estate, that means cellar decisions made in step with vineyard work, with the present vintage held against a longer family rhythm.

The Brand family property sits in the northern Pfalz, around Bockenheim an der Weinstraße, where vines and farmland meet a cooler limestone landscape. Jonas works within a house that took a sharper public shape in 2014, when the Brand Bros name became the vehicle for a more direct natural-wine program. The estate’s farming moved into organic conversion from that point and reached certification in 2018. Lineage here is not used as decoration. It gives the work a floor: the familiarity of a family cellar, the pressure of keeping it alive, and the freedom to let the wines speak in a less polished register.

Limestone, lees, and the low-intervention line

The estate farms around 18 hectares, with 12 hectares on the slopes of Mount Sonnenberg, where limestone soils and the cool influence of the Haardt massif shape the pace of ripening. Riesling, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Müller-Thurgau are part of the range, alongside other Pfalz varieties that suit the site’s acid line and slower climate. The method stays close to natural wine: organic vineyards, no synthetic treatments in the field, spontaneous fermentation, time on lees, and bottling without additives or filtration.

Those choices matter because they narrow the room for correction. Native yeasts set their own pace. Lees contact builds texture without a cosmetic hand. The cellar also works with vessels that include clay amphorae, keeping the program open to older materials while resisting the gloss of a heavy cellar signature. Jonas’s named wines, including Riesling Pur, Wilder Satz and Holy Chapel, show how the house moves between clarity, field-blend energy and vineyard emphasis without leaving its discipline behind.

A quiet estate on the northern edge

The place itself keeps a rural register. This is a family-run winery rather than a polished tourism room, set among vines and farmland on the northern edge of Pfalz. The cellar, the tasting room and the surrounding slopes belong to the same atmosphere: practical, quiet, and close to the weather. Nothing in the setting asks to be over-read. The work gives enough.

That down-to-earth character suits the wines. Skin-contact bottlings, pét-nat, still whites, reds and sparkling wines all come from the same estate grammar, with acidity and fruit carried by limestone rather than weight. In the tasting room, the point is not spectacle but proximity to the method: farmed rows, fermenting juice, bottles that keep the mark of cellar decisions. The bottle that names the house’s line is Riesling Pur.
