Reading Tintilia from the plateau

Antonio Valerio reads the vineyard before the cellar, working as winemaker at Campi Valerio in Monterodnuni, Italy, where Tintilia carries the estate’s most local argument. His station is not a single bench but a sequence of decisions: when the fruit has enough shape, how firmly to hold the red varieties, when Falanghina needs stainless steel rather than wood, and how much of the Pentro di Isernia plateau should remain legible in the glass. Campi Valerio was officially founded in 2004 by the Valerio family, on a rural estate whose vineyard history is tied to Prince Giovanni Pignatelli and the 17th century. The family connection to the region is older still, with ties given from 1836, but Antonio’s work is present tense, held in the vineyard rows and the cellar rather than in a family chronicle. His role covers the estate’s production across native Molise grapes, including Tintilia, Falanghina, Montepulciano and Trebbiano. The discipline is one of restraint: sustainable farming, small family scale, and quality over volume on land that also carries olive groves and livestock.

Stainless steel, lees, and native fruit

The program at Campi Valerio rests on about 35 acres of vineyard spread across five vineyard sites, with altitudes ranging from 290 meters to 560 meters above sea level. That vertical difference matters here. It gives Antonio separate readings of ripeness, acidity and skin character before the fruit reaches the cellar, especially for Tintilia del Molise DOC, the native red that anchors the estate’s identity. Falanghina for Fannia ferments in stainless steel vats, a choice that keeps the wine’s aromatic line clean; the wine is then aged on the lees, bringing texture without turning the white program toward heaviness. Calidio Montepulciano also stays in stainless steel, where acid, tannin and fruit can hold their positions without a heavy barrel signature. Opalia Tintilia is treated for a longer arc, built for structure and age while keeping freshness in view. The barrel program is minimal, used only where the wine asks for more frame. The method is not nostalgic. It is a practical way of letting Molise varieties speak in their own register.

The cellar below the hills

The cellar feels tied to the land outside it: mountainous Sannio Pentro, fields, olive groves, rivers and the long influence of the Volturno. Tastings here are guided with an educational bent, less performance than bench-side explanation, moving between vineyard, cellar and portfolio so that the place and the wines stay in the same conversation. The atmosphere is quiet, rural and family-run, with the kind of pace that suits wines made from varieties still carrying regional memory rather than international shorthand. Fannia carries one of the estate’s clearest historical marks: its label refers to the oldest known artifact from the Roman Empire in Italy, a tombstone found near the winery. That detail could be ornament elsewhere. Here it sits close to the work, another layer of ground under Fannia Falanghina.
