Since 1985 at the same estate

The cellar work stays close to the rock. Jean-François Orosquette, winemaker at Château La Grave in Badens, has held his line here since 1985, with the vineyard and cellar treated as one station rather than two departments. His parents, Josiane and Jean-Pierre Orosquette, established the independent cellar in the 1970s after the family had cultivated wine in Badens for generations. Short of funds for a conventional tank room, they cut subterranean tanks directly into the stone, a practical decision that became part of the estate’s method.

Jean-François succeeded that founding generation and kept the white wines at the centre of the house while extending the work into red and rosé. The next hands are already in the room: his nephew Tristan and his son Julien now contribute to the family operation. That lineage matters because Château La Grave is not built around a borrowed style. It is built around repetition in one place, with Badens as the reference point, Maccabeu as a house marker, and the same cellar discipline returning with each harvest.

Rock tanks and Hauts de Badens

The estate works 100 hectares of vines and grows its own fruit, with Macabeu, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Marselan among the varieties tied to the program. The labels move across AOP Minervois, IGP Oc and IGP Hauts de Badens, the last produced only by Château La Grave. That local designation gives the cellar a narrow brief: wines that must carry the estate’s own name, rather than leaning on a broader regional shorthand.

The rock-carved tanks remain the technical signature. Josiane and Jean-Pierre first used the stone because they could not expand in the usual way; the advantage was the cool, steady environment it gave the wines. At the bench-side of a winery, that sort of temperature stability is not decorative. It shapes freshness, especially in whites, and it lets the hand of the cellar stay quieter. For rosé and some reds, the house also works with inox cuves. From the 2019 vintage, Château La Grave has carried Terra Vitis certification, following its longer practice of Reasoned Culture in the vineyard.

A tasting cellar cut from stone

The tasting cellar brings the production story into the room without turning it into theatre. Stone holds the coolness; contemporary lines sit against older surfaces; the welcome remains family-scaled even though the estate works at a large production scale. The place is quiet enough for the glass to lead. In Badens, near Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi, the vineyard feels close to the cellar rather than separate from it.

The portfolio gives that setting its range: Cuvée Privilège Rouge, Cuvée Privilège Blanc, Cuvée Expression Rouge, Cuvée Expression Blanc and Cuvée Expression Rosé. Read together, they show how Jean-François Orosquette has kept the family’s white-wine inheritance in view while widening the pass. The next generation is already learning inside that frame, with Tristan and Julien beside the stone tanks of Château La Grave.
