The varietal choice comes first. Brett Escalera, winemaker at Consilience Wines in Santa Ynez, builds the work around Rhône grapes and the wider company they keep. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Viognier, Roussanne, Petite Sirah and Grenache Blanc sit beside Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, a list that tells the reader where his attention goes before any tasting note does. His formal training runs through California State University, Fresno. The cellar route began at Santa Barbara Winery from 1985, with later work at Byron Winery and a winemaking post at Fess Parker Winery before ownership and winemaking came together at Consilience. That path matters here because the place asks for range without blur. Escalera works across Rhône, Burgundian, Italian and Spanish varieties, but the public face of Consilience is not a single decorative house style. It is a discipline of grape, blend and table, with food-friendly wines made in small production and tied to Santa Ynez Valley fruit.

Rhône structure, carried in small lots

Consilience works below 2000 cases per year, a scale that keeps the cellar language close to decisions made by hand rather than by committee. The portfolio points clearly toward still red and still white wines, with Rhône structure at the center. Escalera’s named signatures include 1997 Santa Barbara County Syrah, Consilience 2021 Petite Sirah, Consilience 2021 GSM red blend and Consilience Cabernet Franc 2021. The GSM tells its own grammar: Grenache for lift and fruit, Syrah for depth, Mourvèdre for grip. The Petite Sirah and Cabernet Franc widen the frame without leaving the bench. The winery describes its production philosophy as sustainable, and the work sits in the Santa Ynez Valley AVA, where the house draws on local grapes rather than treating the tasting room as a stage set apart from the cellar. The method published around the house is restrained; the varietal program itself is built to keep each wine legible at the table.

A quiet room in Solvang

The tasting room in Solvang gives the wines a slower register than the street outside. The town’s Danish-style facades carry the day’s movement, but inside the room the pace belongs to the glass, the counter and the person pouring. Consilience is part of the Sanger Family of Wines, and the room has the feel of a family-owned winery rather than a large reception hall: spacious enough for friends to share a flight, intimate enough that the varietal names still matter when they are spoken. The setting reaches beyond the room to an estate vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley mountains, giving the place a second geography, one for conversation and one for fruit. If the close of the visit has a signature, it is Escalera’s 2021 GSM red blend.
