One chain from vine to bottle

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir move through one set of hands here: Alex Moreau, winemaker at Domaine Alex Moreau in Chassagne-Montrachet, leads cellar, vineyards, and bottling as one continuous piece of work. The station is not split between farming and cellar display. Fruit condition sets the first terms; élevage and bottling answer to that condition rather than pulling the wine toward a house effect. Moreau came to this narrow Burgundian frame after work at wineries in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa, then joined Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils from 1995. Since 2021, the domaine has carried his own name, with full control of the winery, cellar, and winemaking under his direction. That sequence matters in the glass because the language stays close to the bench: precision, restraint, and respect for terroir. The wines are allowed fullness, but not weight for its own sake. Texture has to keep freshness. Depth has to keep site.

Chassagne handled without excess

The cellar works with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Aligoté, and Gamay, though the domaine is most closely read through its still whites and reds from Chassagne-Montrachet. The method made public is deliberately spare: sustainable farming, small scale, old vines, and hands-off winemaking. Those words do not give away a fermentation recipe or a barrel program, and the domaine does not dress them as theatre. They point instead to a hierarchy of decisions. The vineyard comes first, then the cellar follows. Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Grandes Rouchotes is the signature bottling named for the domaine’s Chardonnay work, a wine framed around site expression, texture, freshness, and proportion. In Moreau’s hands, opulence is not treated as a finish line. It has to remain tied to place, with amplitude held in check by lift.

A cellar opposite Champs Gain

The cellar sits opposite the Champs Gain vineyard, giving the work a close physical scale: rows outside, stone and barrel inside, the tasting conducted in the quiet of the cave rather than in a separate performance room. The atmosphere is rustic, intimate, and classic in the Burgundian sense, not polished away from its function. This is a place of low noise and repeated tasks, where the useful details are often small: the condition of the fruit, the feel of a wine during élevage, the decision not to add imprint when the site has already spoken clearly enough. The room asks for attention more than explanation.

The first release under the name

The current chapter began with the 2021 vintage, the first release under the Domaine Alex Moreau name. That makes the domaine both old in its family ground and newly precise in authorship, with Moreau’s control of vineyards, cellar, and winemaking gathered under one signature. For now, the clearest place to read that authorship is Les Grandes Rouchotes.
