The fruit is read in the rows before it is handled in the cellar. Jérôme Galeyrand, winemaker at Domaine Jérôme Galeyrand in Gevrey-Chambertin, keeps that order close to the work. His apprenticeship began with the plain mechanics of vineyard labor: from 1996, he worked as a harvester at Domaine Alain Burguet in Gevrey-Chambertin, learning season by season how timing, repetition, and weather shape the material before any cellar decision can correct or clarify it.

Since 2002, Galeyrand has worked under his own name as founder and winemaker of Domaine Jérôme Galeyrand. That role keeps him attached to the whole cycle of the estate, not only the moment of vinification. The domaine is small, with 5.25 ha and about 2000 cases a year, and the scale matters. It places the maker close to the parcels, the fruit, and the separate lots that become the domaine’s working vocabulary. His signature bottlings include La Justice, Billard, Croisette, Les Retraits, and Domaine Jérôme Galeyrand Gevrey-Chambertin Justice 2023. They read as place names before they read as labels.

Pinot Noir by parcel and patience

The program here is built around Pinot Noir in Gevrey-Chambertin AOC, with Chardonnay and Aligoté also part of the domaine’s work. The stated philosophy is biodynamic, and the emphasis falls on patient vineyard practice rather than cellar display. Galeyrand has described the necessity of working in the vines, of connecting earlier experience with wine to the direct labor of winegrowing. That sentence carries the discipline of the place: before style, before polish, there is contact with the plant.

Old vines in Côte de Nuits lieux-dits give the domaine its frame. The wines are still, red, and shaped for clarity of site, with a hand that favors precision over weight. The house keeps the details of fermentation and élevage quiet, so the more useful reading comes from what it does name: parcels, small scale, biodynamic work, and the continuity of one winemaker returning to the same ground. Les Retraits has particular weight in Galeyrand’s own account; he has said it was the first parcel he took on lease, in Comblanchien.

A quiet cellar in Gevrey-Chambertin

The setting is a small winery in Gevrey-Chambertin, surrounded by the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits. The room is quiet, intimate, and built for attention rather than spectacle. A cave tasting here belongs to the cellar more than to a hospitality script: glass, bottle, bench-side conversation, and the measured comparison of cuvées whose names come from the land around them.

That restraint suits the wines. Pinot Noir asks for little noise when the work has already been done in the vineyard, and the atmosphere follows the same line: rustic in its closeness to the craft, elegant in its refusal to overstate. The next release to read closely is not an abstraction but a parcel speaking in its own register, especially Les Retraits.
