A cellar tied to Lock Vineyard

The estate setting is a 30 acres hillside property on the Westside of the Paso Robles AVA, with Lock Vineyard feeding the identity of the wines and the barrel room set close enough to make tasting from cask part of the house language. The portfolio moves through Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Carignane, a range that lets Lock work between Rhône weight and Bordeaux frame without leaving the red-wine discipline that defines the place. Production stays small, and the method favors on-site handling over distance. The named signatures set out his sensibility: The Ensemble, Rendition, 2005 Ecluse Syrah, 2005 Ecluse Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2005 Zinfandel. They point to a cellar interested in structure, varietal clarity, and the kind of depth that comes from choosing the moment to pick, then staying with the lot as it takes shape.

Oak, hillside air, and a quiet room

The barrel room carries the first impression before the glass does: oak, cellar coolness, and the close scale of a place built for tasting beside the work rather than apart from it. Ecluse pours in an intimate register, with barrel samples part of the experience and the winemaker’s proximity still visible in the room. Outside, the patio looks over rolling vineyard hills, giving the cellar a second register, not grander, just more open. The room is quiet enough for the pour to hold attention. Staff energy keeps the tasting from becoming hushed, but the scale remains personal, with the bench-side feeling of a winery where the barrels are not scenery.
