He cofounded the winery in 1977, after training at the University of Zagreb, and carried that early foundation in tradition into a Napa Valley address built around patience, balance, and origin.

The lineage is unusually plain. Grgich is known for the Chardonnay that won the 1976 Paris Tasting, a result that changed how California wine could be judged against older assumptions. At this Rutherford estate, the point is not to retell that moment as ornament. It is to keep working from the same conviction that wine should reflect its birthplace. His own formulation remains direct: “It’s our goal to make truly delicious wines that reflect their birthplace.” The sentence gives the cellar its discipline. Style serves the site.

Five vineyards, one estate method

The program draws from five estate vineyards totaling over 250 acres, with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Petite Sirah forming the working vocabulary. The winery describes its farming as regenerative, and its estate vineyards are Regenerative Organic Certified. That matters in the glass because the fruit is not treated as a neutral input. Grgich’s range has always moved across different structures without abandoning continuity. The room at Grgich Hills Estate works at a lower volume than the valley around it often suggests. Natural light moves through the seated tasting space, with vineyard rows, gardens, and mountain views close enough to keep the farming in sight. The register is relaxed rather than theatrical. Glasses arrive in a setting that lets the wine keep the lead, which suits a maker whose public language has long returned to restraint, origin, and proof in the glass.
