The cellar is where her training took its working shape: after study at University of San Diego, she entered the family winery as assistant winemaker in 2006 and learned the estate by season, by harvest, by the decisions that carry fruit from vineyard to bottle. She now leads that work as Head Winemaker, holding the house to a line she describes through continuity, restraint, and clarity.

That restraint matters here because the place is not built around novelty. Hedges Family Estate works as a family-owned Red Mountain estate with 100% Demeter-certified biodynamic farming, and Sarah’s brief is to keep the cellar aligned with that ground. The house frames its style through French influence: the grapes, the winemaking, the labels, and the preference for balanced, old-world-style wine rather than wines made to follow fashion. Her hand is visible across Three Vineyards, La Haute Cuvée, CMS, Red Mountain Syrah, and Bel’ Villa Vineyard, with Syrah from Bel’ Villa Vineyard sitting closest to her named specialty.

Biodynamic farming on Red Mountain

The method begins outside the cellar. The estate sits among 125 acres of vineyards in the Red Mountain AVA, farming Bordeaux varieties under a biodynamic and organic discipline. Those choices set limits before the fruit reaches the crush pad: estate scale, still red and still white wines, and a cellar program that has to answer to its own land rather than a wider buying map. Sarah carries that line from vineyard to bottle, with technical control doing the work where it can and judgment taking over where vintage asks for it.

Hedges does not need many gestures to state its intent. Demeter certification is a demanding frame, and 100% biodynamic farming gives the cellar a clear set of materials. The wines named by the house move through several registers, from CMS to La Haute Cuvée to Red Mountain Syrah, but the family resemblance depends on the same discipline: balance, French influence, and enough patience to let Red Mountain stay audible in the glass.

The château and the cellar

The winery’s French-inspired château stands among the vines with the Blue Mountains set at a distance. Inside, the tasting room keeps a quiet register: rustic warmth, polished edges, and a pace that lets the estate tasting remain close to the work rather than separate from it. The room looks back toward the vineyard grounds, so the hospitality does not have to explain the premise for long. The vines are in view.

That proximity gives the place its useful tension. Hedges Family Estate has the architecture of a château, but the work still returns to the cellar and the vineyard. Sarah’s wines carry names that belong to this ground, and the clearest close remains the one she keeps making from Bel’ Villa Vineyard.
