When Jonathan Whitener and Lien Ta converted a former Philly cheesesteak shop on West 6th Street into a Koreatown bistro in 2016, the premise was deceptively simple: cook the food that actually reflects Los Angeles. What followed was nearly a decade of cross-cultural cooking that drew on French technique, the Southland's Mexican and German immigrant traditions, and the Korean neighbourhood surrounding the dining room. Whitener, who had served as chef de cuisine at Animal under Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo, brought classical rigour to combinations that could have read as gimmicky but consistently held together on the plate. The menu read as a document of the city's food culture rather than a chef's ego project. Frog legs coated in salsa negra became one of the dishes most closely associated with the restaurant's identity, while a beef tartare built around rice porridge, chicken skin, verjus, buttermilk, and seagrass illustrated how Whitener worked: European foundations, Pacific Rim pantry, Los Angeles context. The room was intimate and eclectic, the kind of space where the cooking demanded attention but the atmosphere did not perform seriousness. Here's Looking at You closed permanently on June 13, 2025. Whitener had passed away in February 2024 at 36, and Lien Ta carried the restaurant forward for more than a year after his death before the closure. That the restaurant continued operating at all after losing its founding chef was a testament to how completely the kitchen's identity had been built into the team rather than resting on a single personality. The closure ends a run that shaped how a generation of Los Angeles diners and cooks understood what progressive SoCal cooking could mean: not fusion as a marketing category, but a genuine reckoning with the city's actual ingredients, communities, and histories.
