Turning family fruit into a label

Old vine Zinfandel sets the first decision for Janell Dusi, winemaker at J Dusi Wines in Paso Robles: keep the family farming name visible, then make the bottle answer for itself. She has worked here since 2005 as founder, owner, and winemaker, holding the vineyard identity, the cellar choices, and the language of the label in the same hands. The role is unusually complete. The lineage is not borrowed atmosphere. J Dusi Wines rests on over 100 years of Dusi family Zinfandel farming in Paso Robles, with Italian immigrant roots still close to the surface of the project. Janell’s formal study at University of California, Santa Barbara gave her one kind of groundwork; the family vineyard gave her the more demanding brief. The wines named The Don and Zinfandel Dante Dusi Vineyard make that brief plain. They place kinship and site on the front of the work, then leave the cellar to give those names shape.

Zinfandel as the working language

The program is built around still wine from the Paso Robles AVA, with Zinfandel at the center and Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Carignane, Petite Sirah, Pinot Grigio, and Rosé around it. The house works at boutique scale and describes its farming direction as sustainable, a word that matters here because the family’s history begins in growing rather than branding. Janell’s task is not to make the vineyard louder. It is to carry the farming into a finished wine without sanding away the family accent.

Her own description of the work is direct: she wanted to hold onto her family heritage of growing old vine Zinfandel and take it further, bottling Zinfandel under the family name. That sentence contains the method. Grow first, bottle second, and let the name on the label remain accountable to the fruit behind it.
