A first barrel set the measure for Dan Kosta, winemaker at Kosta Browne Winery in Sebastopol. The house began in 1997, when Kosta turned an early effort into a sustained practice around California wine, and the line still reads through Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. At this address in The Barlow, the work sits inside a small-production winery known for Sonoma Coast bottlings, private tastings, barrel tasting, and library wines brought forward with control rather than theatre. Kosta’s route into wine has always carried a maker’s economy: tip money saved in Santa Rosa, one barrel, then the patience to keep refining the form. The role here is not presented as a scholastic pedigree or a borrowed mantle. It is builder’s work, shaped by entrepreneurship, close attention to texture, and a belief that wine should meet the drinker in the glass. Kosta has since founded Convene in 2022 and DK Wine Group, but this winery remains part of the career’s first vocabulary: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, and the long way from first barrel to house style.

Pinot Noir held close to texture

The program here is narrow by design. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay carry the weight, with Sonoma Coast as the steady point of reference and small production as the scale of the work. That format matters. A barrel sample catches wine before the finished polish; a library bottle asks the same material to answer after age. Between those two points, the maker’s discipline becomes legible without a lecture. Kosta’s known signature line includes 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, Convene Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, and Admire Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, a set that keeps returning to the same coastal register. Nothing in that repetition feels accidental. Pinot Noir rewards restraint and punishes force, and the tasting program gives the house room to show that lesson bench-side, one pour at a time.

The cellar beside the couches

The room at The Barlow keeps the winery close to its industrial shell. Warehouse-chic surfaces, controlled quiet, and living room-style seating soften the edge without hiding the working context. Comfortable couches make the tasting feel private, but the language of the place stays tied to the cellar: barrels, pours, older bottles, the slow comparison between what is still forming and what has already settled. It is an intimate room rather than a spectacle, with the high-end atmosphere held in proportion. That restraint suits the wines. Pinot Noir does not need a loud room around it, and Chardonnay benefits from the same calm. In Sebastopol, the counter and the cellar share the frame, and the guest’s attention is allowed to stay with the glass.

A builder’s thread continues

Kosta’s later work at Convene and DK Wine Group keeps the same maker’s instinct in motion, especially his stated wish to widen the circle around wine rather than speak only to those already inside it. Here, that ambition returns to a concrete beginning: the 1997 barrel that became Kosta Browne Winery.
