La Calenda

<p>For six years, La Calenda occupied a particular gap in Yountville's Washington Street dining corridor: a Mexican restaurant serious enough about craft to earn a Michelin Bib Gourmand, yet priced and pitched for the kind of casual, family-friendly meal that the surrounding fine-dining concentration rarely accommodates. In a village where tasting-menu counters dominate, that positioning mattered.</p> <p>The kitchen drew its reference points from Oaxaca, building the menu around house-made tortillas pressed from nixtamalized corn, slow-cooked moles, and tacos filled with barbacoa, al pastor, and carnitas. Wood-grilled fish and skirt steak extended the repertoire beyond the taqueria format without abandoning the regional Mexican framework. Chef Kaelin Ulrich Trilling developed the menu under the direction of Thomas Keller, whose broader Yountville operation includes some of the most reservation-intensive tables in California. La Calenda served as the approachable counterpoint to that portfolio.</p> <p>The room matched the cooking's tone: rustic wooden tables, handcrafted Mexican decor, and an outdoor patio that made the space feel more Oaxacan market than Napa showpiece. That contrast with the neighbourhood's prevailing aesthetic was deliberate, and it gave the restaurant a distinct character on a street where white tablecloths and long tasting menus set the dominant register. The Bib Gourmand recognition confirmed what the format implied: serious technique at a price point well below the valley's fine-dining ceiling.</p> <p>La Calenda closed in December 2024 after six years of operation. Its absence leaves Yountville without a Mexican restaurant at that level of culinary rigour, and without the Bib Gourmand anchor that had given the town's dining scene a degree of range it no longer has.</p>
