Old vines under Joel Aiken’s hand

The old head-trained vines set the first terms. Joel Aiken, winemaker at Plinio Wines in Rutherford, works with fruit from a 53-acre vineyard on the Rutherford Bench, where the rows sit at the base of Mt. St. John in alluvial gravelly soils. The place asks for a maker comfortable with both cellar discipline and vineyard consequence. Aiken brings that from a career rooted in Rutherford, including his tenure as winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard from 1985 to 2009, and from his current work as owner and winemaker at Aiken Wine Consulting.

His name here belongs to structure more than display. Cabernet Sauvignon is part of his known discipline, and Plinio’s ground gives him that grape alongside Zinfandel, Alicante Bouschet, Carignan, Syrah, Durif, Négrette and Valdiguié. The vineyard’s pre-prohibition field blend vines, planted in the 1910s, are the rare material at the bench. Plinio identifies them as one of only nine remaining such vineyards in Napa Valley. That fact does not need ornament. It changes the pace of the work before a cluster reaches the cellar.

A field blend with older instructions

The program at Plinio is built around still red wine and estate intimacy rather than breadth. The vineyard is contiguous, dry-farmed, and small in scale, with old-vine Zinfandel and companion varieties carrying a field-blend logic from another period of Napa farming. In that kind of parcel, the maker does not begin with a blank blending sheet. The vineyard has already made decisions, through vine age, mixed planting, soil, exposure, and the stubborn survival of varieties that modern replanting might have erased.

Aiken’s task is to keep those decisions legible. His broader work is known for balance, varietal detail, and architecture in the finished wine; at Plinio, those habits meet a site where Cabernet Sauvignon can stand beside grapes more often treated as supporting voices. The method begins before the cellar door.

The vineyard sets the room tone

The quiet at Plinio is not theatrical. It comes from the setting, a rustic, classic vineyard property with old head-trained vines and a sense of family continuity around the rows. The tasting room is not the center of the story; the vineyard is. In an intimate estate tasting or private tasting, the attention moves outward, toward the bench, the gravel, and the old mixed plantings that make the wines less interchangeable than a label might allow.

Rutherford can pull a room toward polish, but Plinio’s stronger note is patience. The site sits within a known appellation, yet the work feels more specific than regional shorthand. A glass here points back to vine material that has held its place since the 1910s, and to a winemaker whose Rutherford years taught him how much restraint a powerful site can require. The close of the craft is not a flourish; it is the continued care of Morisoli Vineyard.
