Restraint before force

Chardonnay asks for restraint before force; Anna Pooley, winemaker at Pooley in Richmond, reads that instruction through the cool line of Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Her route to this cellar began with winemaking study at the University of Adelaide in 2002, then moved through rooms shaped by white wine, sparkling wine, established Australian labels, and the maritime conditions of Tasmania. The sequence matters because it shows in the work: calibration first, then decision. Pooley was chief winemaker in Tasmania from 2006 to 2012, and has been winemaker at Pooley from 2012 to the present. At this station, family and technique sit close together. She has described the pull plainly: “Doing what I love for those I love.” The line is spare, and it suits a house where the task is not to enlarge the gesture, but to keep it exact enough for site, season, and family-owned fruit to remain legible in the glass.

Cool fruit from family vineyards

The program at Pooley is built around Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling, with Syrah also part of Anna Pooley’s signature vocabulary. The estate’s scale is small, its stated philosophy sustainable, and its position in the Coal River Valley keeps the work tied to cool-climate rhythm rather than weight. Ocean influence is part of the wider Tasmanian brief; Pooley has spoken of “slight differences in climate” producing a spectrum of wines across the state. That makes the cellar’s discipline one of close reading. Pinot Noir needs shape without heaviness. Chardonnay needs texture without blur. Riesling needs line. The glass is made to land on composure rather than force.

Sandstone between house and vines

The cellar door occupies a historic Georgian, convict-built sandstone Coach House set between heritage home and vines. Inside, the room keeps a quiet register: sandstone, warmth, and the kind of stillness that lets a structured tasting feel bench-side rather than ceremonial. Outside, the lawn opens to countryside views, and the Coal River Valley gives the place its measure without needing to be overexplained. This is not a cellar that asks for spectacle. It asks for attention to temperature in the room, light on the stone, and the way a cool-climate wine changes as it sits in the glass. The setting supports the work by staying close to it.

A family cellar with a fixed hand

Pooley’s public measure is not a parade of claims. It is the continuity of Anna Pooley at the bench, the family vineyards behind the fruit, and the Coach House holding the tasting room in sandstone rather than gloss. Her own line, “for this is where the heart and soul of wine exists,” brings the work back to people, but the execution remains technical. If the next release is unnamed, the thread to follow is already in the cellar: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Pooley Syrah.
