Chardonnay and Pinot Noir under one hand

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir set the bench for Adam Wadewitz, winemaker at Tolpuddle Vineyard in Richmond. His work here sits within Shaw + Smith, where he moved into the Senior Winemaker role from 2013 after earlier winemaking posts at Best's and Seppelt. That sequence matters in a cellar. Judgment comes from repetition, from tasting the same decisions through different fruit, different seasons, different houses, then carrying only what still holds.

Wadewitz now serves as Joint CEO of Shaw + Smith, a title that widens the remit without removing the cellar from the work. At Tolpuddle, his name attaches to a narrow register: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Coal River Valley. The continuity is the point. The person guiding the business has also spent time on the tools, and the wines carry that kind of accumulated attention rather than a separate managerial language.

A small program in a cool valley

The program is deliberately tight: still white wine from Chardonnay, still red wine from Pinot Noir. Tolpuddle works at small scale and describes its farming direction as sustainable, with a vineyard set on gentle north-east facing slopes above historic Richmond in the Coal River Valley. Those facts are enough to understand the discipline. This is not a cellar built around breadth. It asks two varieties to return, each season, to the same site and the same questions of ripeness, acid, fruit weight, tannin and length.

The Coal River Valley gives the place its frame: cool, dry, and visually open, with the vineyard looking across Richmond rather than sitting behind a cellar door as decoration. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are unforgiving companions in that setting. They do not give a winemaker many places to hide. Wadewitz's broader signature across Tolpuddle Chardonnay, Tolpuddle Pinot Noir and the core Shaw + Smith bottlings points to a controlled register rather than a restless one, with varietal expression and consistency carrying as much weight as novelty.

The tasting room and the slope

The room keeps close to the vineyard. Large floor-to-ceiling windows pull the eye back to the rows, so the tasting flight reads against the slope that made it rather than against a display of bottles. The atmosphere is quiet, modern and composed, with the cellar's work translated through the stillness of a small tasting room. It is not a loud house. The view does much of the speaking.

That matters for a place built around Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In the glass, the visitor has the two wines most closely associated with Tolpuddle; through the windows, the north-east facing vineyard explains why the range stays so focused.
