The decision is operational before it is ceremonial: Alexander McDonald, manager of Port Ellen Distillery in Port Ellen, has to turn a restored name back into a working distillery. McDonald did not arrive at that post from a distance. He began as a distillery worker at Kilchoman Distillery, where the work starts close to the floor and the day is set by the demands of the site. He then moved through Caol Ila and Lagavulin as a distiller, taking his place inside Islay’s whisky network one role at a time. Training at the Institute of Brewing & Distilling gave that route its formal discipline, but the line here is also one of repeated contact with production: the rhythm of a distillery, the attention required by spirit, the need to notice when a process is behaving as it should. At Port Ellen, McDonald’s role sits between restoration and output. He has described the appointment as “an honour and a privilege,” language that keeps the emphasis on stewardship rather than ownership.

A restoration held to the tools

The craft at Port Ellen, as publicly framed through McDonald’s post, is not yet a portfolio of named releases or a disclosed set of house specifications. It is the discipline of bringing a distillery back into active use without treating the return as theatre. McDonald’s own words place the work at the threshold: “This is an incredibly exciting time for everyone at Port Ellen and I look forward to leading the team as we prepare for the historic moment when spirit flows through the stills once again.” The sentence matters because it names the actual hinge of the project, spirit moving through stills, and because it makes the team the unit of work. In a still house, leadership is not abstract. Someone has to hold the sequence together: preparation before production, consistency before release, daily oversight before public judgement.

Port Ellen asks for a slower kind of attention because the room is being understood through return. The still house is not described here through visitor polish or a finished tasting script; it is understood through the pressure on the people preparing it for use. McDonald’s work gives the place its present tense. He stands at the point where a remembered distillery has to behave like a functioning one, with a team, a method, and enough patience to let the first spirit matter for what it is rather than what the name once was. The texture is procedural: checks before flow, hands before announcement, the quiet weight of a site on Islay being asked to produce again. For now, the clearest thing to hold is the moment McDonald named, spirit through the stills at Port Ellen.
