A hillside program claimed by hand

Cabernet Franc gives Lodovico Antinori, winemaker at Tenuta di Biserno in Bolgheri, the frame for the estate’s red wine work. He founded the property in Bibbona in 2001, after a working life already marked by Bolgheri estate practice and by the pressure of the Antinori name. The move matters because it changed the nature of the work. At Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, he was part of a property that had become one of Tuscany’s closely watched estates. At Biserno, the direction sits under his own structure, with the vineyard and cellar arranged around a project he could claim.

The family register is not incidental here. Antinori has described Biserno as a family joint venture, and has spoken of the wish to work again with his brother. That places the estate inside a familiar Tuscan tension: inheritance on one side, departure on the other. The work is not a rejection of lineage. It is lineage under pressure, tested by a different site, a different blend, and a different set of decisions in the cellar.

Forty hectares above the sea

The estate works from 40 hectares of hillside vineyard near the Tyrrhenian Sea, at 90m altitude, on alluvial and clay-limestone soils. The planting leans to Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. Within that group, Cabernet Franc supplies the technical spine of the program, setting Biserno apart from a simple replication of the wider Bolgheri template.

The wines are still reds under Bolgheri DOC, built from fruit grown in a place where the slope, soil, and sea air all press on the final shape of the blend. The house does not state its fermentation or aging protocols in public detail, so the read here stays with what the estate makes plain: a disciplined red wine program, conventionally farmed, on a compact hillside holding, with construction rather than ornament at its center. Il Pino di Biserno and Lodovico sit among the names attached to Antinori’s signature work, carrying that preference for structure into the glass.

The cellar quiets the room

The atmosphere around Biserno is not built on noise. The estate sits among rolling Tuscan hills, olive groves, aromatic herbs, and vineyard views, with a tasting room register that stays intimate rather than theatrical. In a place like this, the landscape can easily become decoration; here it reads more usefully as working condition. The cellar, vineyard, and tasting room all answer to the same hillside.

That restraint suits the wines. Cabernet Franc does not need a loud room around it, and neither does Antinori’s project. The point is the long way: estate fruit, family pressure, a Bolgheri site, and a maker still working inside the consequences of founding Tenuta di Biserno in 2001.
