Personal taste at the blending bench

The blend comes first as a question of permission. Jean-Noel Fourmeaux works as winemaker at VGS Chateau Potelle in St. Helena, letting Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah stay close to the hand rather than to volume. Jean-Noel Fourmeaux is also founder and owner here, and the house remains boutique in scale, with limited production as part of the discipline, not a flourish. His earlier post as official taster for the French government in California in 1980 put discernment at the center of the work before VGS Chateau Potelle gave him his own cellar language. The sentence he gives for the practice is plain: “I empower people to be themselves and to embrace their own personal taste and give it the chance it deserves.” At this station, that means wines shaped for style, character and birthplace, with enough restraint that the finished bottle does not need to announce its intention.

The Illegitimate and the long permission of Napa

The house range moves through still red, still white and still rosé, with Napa Valley AVA as the frame and mountain fruit sourcing from Mt. Veeder part of the place’s grammar. Fourmeaux’s clearest declaration may be The Illegitimate, a red blend of Zinfandel, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. He has said that blending it that way is illegal in France; in Napa Valley, it becomes a working choice, a way to let personal taste hold the final authority. The VGS Zinfandel gives another line of continuity. First released in 1990, it sits beside The Illegitimate and the Fourmeaux 2016 Red Blend as part of a limited-production practice built on character rather than volume.

A cottage tasting room with mountain fruit behind it

The tasting house works at a lower register than the wines’ names might suggest. VGS Chateau Potelle receives guests in a remodeled cottage and garden in St. Helena, a room built for seated, private-format tastings rather than procession. The atmosphere is quiet, warm and close, with hospitality that explains without flattening the wine into a lesson. Food comes into the program through paired bites from La Toque Restaurant, giving the tasting a bench-side rhythm: a pour, a plate, a return to the glass. The setting matters because the wines are not presented as trophies. They are handled as decisions, one after another, in a room small enough for a guest to feel how Cabernet Franc changes the edge of a blend, or how Sauvignon Blanc cleans the line of a white.

Where the discipline remains visible

Fourmeaux’s work here matters most when it refuses the easy opposition between French training and Napa freedom. The palate formed under government tasting work did not become a rulebook; it became a means of choosing with precision. At VGS Chateau Potelle, that precision holds across Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and the bottles that cross their boundaries. The bottle says it most directly: The Illegitimate.
