Blaufränkisch sets the first mark for Hans Nittnaus, winemaker at Weingut Anita und Hans Nittnaus in Gols, before the blend begins to take its shape. His work here carries two posts at once: Leitung des Weinguts, the direction of the estate, and Kellermeister, the cellar role that keeps judgment close to the cask, the tank, and the daily sequence of decisions. The discipline began away from wine, at Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst, Wien, where timing and form were part of the training. In Gols, those habits moved into the cellar.

Hans took alleinige Kellerverantwortung at Weingut Nittnaus from 1975, a phrase with little ornament and a great deal of weight. Since 1985, his work has joined estate stewardship to cellar execution, with responsibility measured not by announcement but by the repetition of vintages. The house works as an independent family estate, quiet in tone, with the kind of authority that comes from staying with one place long enough for the bench to become a method. Gols gives that method its frame: a village in the Neusiedlersee appellation, near Lake Neusiedl, where Pannonian light and wind meet the patience of cellar work.

Thirty six hectares under biodynamic care

The estate farms 36 hectares with a biodynamic philosophy, drawing from sandy-loamy Pannonian plains and from the limestone-slate ground of the Leithaberg mountain. That split matters in the glass. The cellar’s red work is anchored by Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, and Merlot, with Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay carrying the white side of the program. The signature Comondor cuvée brings Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, and Merlot into a Pannonian register rather than a borrowed one, built for line, depth, and proportion.

The house is known for still red and still white wines rather than breadth for its own sake. Its direction is biodynamic and organic, and the ground itself is plain and mountain, loam and stone, with warmth moderated by the lake’s presence. Hans’s dual role keeps viticulture and cellar decisions in conversation. Estate direction is not separate from the hands that read ferment, structure, and blend. The craft here is a matter of choosing when to hold back.

A quiet cave tasting room

The tasting happens in the cave, where the room keeps its voice low and the wines have room to register before explanation fills the space. This is not a house of theatrical hospitality. The atmosphere is rustic, intimate, and terroir-focused, shaped by vineyard heritage rather than decoration. Outside, the setting shifts between the plains around Gols and the rise toward Leithaberg; inside, the cellar mood remains measured.

The work feels close to the land because the room does not compete with it. Visitors meet the wines where the estate wants attention placed: on Blaufränkisch, on Zweigelt, on Merlot, on the white varieties that hold the other side of the range, and on the long connection between cellar rhythm and vineyard site. If the estate has a public gesture, it is restraint. The final word belongs to Comondor.
