Since 2008 at the family cellar

Since 2008, the hand on the family cellar has been Michael Malat’s. Michael Malat works as winemaker at Weingut Malat in Furth bei Göttweig, Austria, after returning from training in Vienna and taking over the estate from his father. The role sits inside a house that traces its family line to 1722, so the work is not a clean break or a personal reinvention. It is an inheritance kept in motion. Malat also runs the family business, which makes the cellar and the office part of the same discipline: vines first, then decisions, then wine that has to carry the name without becoming rigid. He has said he wants wines people enjoy drinking, not just tasting. That sentence explains much of the estate’s present tense. The aim is not distance. It is usefulness, clarity, and a bottle that returns to the table.

Organic Kremstal, spontaneous in the cellar

The estate works organically across 45ha in Kremstal DAC, with vineyards on Göttweiger Berg and soils that move through primary rock, loess, mica schist, and gneiss. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling sit at the center of the range, with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Gelber Muskateller also in the hands. The house makes still white, still red, and sparkling wines, and its signatures include Crazy Creatures, Crazy Creatures Grüner Veltliner, Brut Rosé, Brut Nature, and Höhlgraben Grüner Veltliner. The given method is spontaneous fermentation, a choice that leaves less room for polish imposed after the fact and more weight on the condition of the fruit when it comes in. Malat speaks about the vines as foundations, and about keeping them in good condition for the next generation. In a cellar tied to 1ÖTW Erste Lagen vineyards, that is not a decorative idea. It is the pressure under each vintage.

The cellar below Göttweiger Berg

The place has the quiet of a south-bank Danube estate, with vineyards rising on Göttweiger Berg and a refined room that keeps close to the cellar rather than performing hospitality as theatre. Tastings here are built around the cave and private formats, which suits a house whose interest is in continuity more than spectacle. The setting carries its own grammar: loess for breadth, primary rock and gneiss for tension, mica schist for another register of cut. Those materials are not background scenery for Malat’s work. They are the bench. The wines have to move from those slopes into a glass without losing the shape of where they began, whether the bottle is a Höhlgraben Grüner Veltliner or a Brut Nature.

What matters at Weingut Malat is the way a long family estate can change hands without losing its line. Michael Malat’s tenure began in 2008, and the address carries 1722 behind it. The next vintage will still have to answer to Göttweiger Berg, to Kremstal DAC, and to the drinker who opens Crazy Creatures Grüner Veltliner at the table.
